Hollywood action star Keanu Reeves is probably most famous for his roles as Neo in the sci-fi martial arts blockbuster The Matrix (and its sequels), and his run as the titular former assassin of the John Wick franchise. In his next martial arts venture, Reeves has joined forces with Academy Award-winning producer Fisher Stevens to co-produce a documentary on the life story of American kickboxing icon Benny Urquidez. The documentary simply called 'The Jet' will be directed by Emmy-nominated sports documentary editor Jennifer Tiexiera.
Keanu Reeves expressed his excitement for the documentary:
"Benny is a true mentor and has had such a profound yet underappreciated impact on both cinema and martial arts. I'm very excited to help share his story with the world."
THE JET
Benny Urquidez, 71, started with full contact karate in 1974. Since then 'The Jet' amassed an impressive record of 49 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw and 3 no contests. However different sources including his own website, claim that he fought over up to 63 matches. The California native is known for fighting in different rulesets all over the globe from the United States, to Japan and even in The Netherlands. The 71-year old martial artist got his nickname for his devastating spinning back kick, that send many opponents to the canvas.
CONTINUED SUCCESS IN MOVIES
After his professional fighting career, he devoted his time to acting and fight choreography. 'The Jet' left a significant impression on martial arts in mainstream culture, starring in movies like Wheels on Meals (1984) and Dragons Forever (1988). Working with the likes of Jacky Chan and Sammo Hung. Aside from a cameo in campy videogame movie adaption Street Fighter (1994), he also provided physical training for most of the movie's cast.
The Jet is currently in production and is expected to release in 2025.
